The Legend of
The Fryer’s Delight
In the year of our fryer, long before UberEats and contactless payments, London faced its greatest threat. A monstrous piece of battered fish, crisped to golden perfection, rose from the depths of the Thames. Towering over St. Paul’s, it rampaged through the city, leaving a trail of mushy peas and panic in its wake. The people trembled. The government was useless. Who could stop it?Then, from the smoky backstreets of Holborn, two fearless chip shop proprietors emerged. Armed only with tradition, skill, and an ungodly amount of beef dripping, they devised a plan: if you can’t beat the fish, fry it. With a fryer hotter than the devil’s own kettle, they lured the beast into their humble shop and dunked it deep.
The sizzle could be heard as far as Brighton. The city was saved.
From that day forward, The Fryer’s Delight became more than just a chip shop—it was a fortress of proper fish & chips. Crisp, golden, and carrying a legacy as mighty as the beast itself. Some say if you listen closely to the fryer, you can still hear the battered colossus.
Step inside and feast on the legend.

A frying Tradition
But behind every legend, there’s a real story. The Fryer’s Delight was founded in 1958 by two Italian brothers, Giovanni and Giuseppe Ferdenzi, who came from Piacenza with a mission to perfect the art of fish and chips. Nestled in the heart of Bloomsbury, their shop quickly became a go-to spot for London’s black cab drivers, locals, and anyone with a proper appreciation for a good fry-up.Here, tradition reigns supreme. The fish—whether it’s cod, haddock, plaice, or skate—is fried in beef dripping, giving it that unmistakable richness. The chips are crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and the batter? A thing of beauty. Unlike the thinner, modern styles, this batter is substantial—an essential part of the dish in its own right, not just a vehicle for the fish.
Over the years, The Fryer’s Delight has cemented its place in London’s history. It’s been praised in newspapers, food guides, and even made its way into pop culture, appearing in The Getaway (2002) and Heart of Stone (2023). Joan Rivers was even known to stop by whenever she was in town, proving that even comedy royalty knew where to find the best chippy in London.
So whether you’re here for nostalgia, a proper portion of fish and chips, or just to soak in the old-school atmosphere, one thing’s for sure—The Fryer’s Delight isn’t just a chip shop. It’s a piece of London history.
